As South Africans prepare to take to the roads this Easter, the national conversation will once again focus on road safety, traffic volumes and inevitably the number of lives lost. But what happens after the headlines fade?

Every year, thousands of South Africans survive road accidents. While fatalities dominate the news cycle, far less attention is given to those who are left behind to deal with the long-term consequences of serious injury — often without the knowledge or support needed to rebuild their lives.

Injuries sustained during accidents can leave individuals unable to work, support their families, or return to normal life. Often, breadwinners suddenly find themselves dependent on others, and the impact is felt by families facing mounting medical costs, emotional trauma and financial uncertainty. Despite the scale of the problem, many South Africans remain unaware that they may be entitled to financial support through the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

“The tragedy doesn’t end at the roadside,” says Amanda Rogaly, CEO of RoadCover. “What we see every day are people trying to navigate life after an accident without understanding their rights or how to access the support available to them.”

The RAF exists to compensate victims of motor vehicle accidents caused by negligent driving. This includes coverage for medical expenses, loss of income and, in serious cases, long-term damages or loss of support for dependants.

However, the process of claiming from the RAF is complex, highly regulated, and time-sensitive. Many claims are never submitted. Others fail due to incomplete documentation, missed deadlines, or a lack of understanding of the legal process.

“There is a significant gap between what people are entitled to and what they actually receive,” Rogaly explains. “Not because the system doesn’t work, but because people don’t know how to access it correctly. This gap becomes especially visible after high-risk travel periods such as Easter, when increased traffic volumes, fatigue, and risky driving behaviour contribute to a spike in accidents across our country.”

Preparedness Matters

While public safety campaigns continue to urge South Africans to drive responsibly, experts say there is an equally important conversation that needs to take place around preparedness.

“No one plans to be in an accident,” Rogaly says. “But knowing what to do if it happens and understanding your rights can make a life-changing difference.”

Dedicated organisations like RoadCover play a role in bridging this gap by assisting individuals through the RAF claims process, from initial registration through to settlement. Importantly, RoadCover operates on a model where claimants retain 100% of any compensation paid out by the RAF.

As South Africans embark on their Easter and future holiday journeys, the message is clear: road safety remains critical, but so too is awareness. While not every accident can be prevented, the long-term impact can be significantly reduced.

“Our focus is not just on managing claims, but on ensuring that people are supported through what is often one of the most difficult periods of their lives,” Rogaly concludes.

Following a tragic road accident involving children earlier this week, RoadCover has extended its heartfelt condolences to the affected families, schools and communities, while renewing its call for greater public awareness around the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and the support it provides to victims and their loved ones.

Road accidents remain one of South Africa’s most serious public safety challenges, with children among the most vulnerable road users. Beyond the immediate shock and trauma of such incidents, families are often left facing long-term medical needs, emotional strain and significant financial uncertainty.

In terms of Road Accident Fund legislation, individuals injured in road accidents, as well as families who lose a loved one, may be legally entitled to compensation if certain criteria are met. This compensation can include medical treatment, rehabilitation, loss of income or support, and funeral expenses. Despite this, many South Africans never access this support due to a lack of understanding of their rights or confusion around how the claims process works.

Confusion Around Claims Leaves Families Vulnerable

In the aftermath of a serious accident, families are often required to make important decisions at a time when they are least equipped to do so. The RAF claims process can be complex, time-sensitive and documentation-heavy. Missed deadlines, incomplete information or incorrect submissions can have lasting consequences — particularly in cases involving children, where injuries may affect future development, education and earning potential.

RoadCover believes that access to clear, accurate information is a critical form of protection. Understanding what the Road Accident Fund covers and how the process works can help families avoid unnecessary stress and ensure they receive the support intended by law.

A Focus on Education and Advocacy

RoadCover has positioned its mandate around public education and advocacy rather than promotion. The organisation works to help South Africans understand their rights following road accidents, guiding families through the claims process and helping them avoid common pitfalls.

“Our position at times like these is not about selling services,” said Eugene Beck, RoadCover founder and chairman. “It is about ensuring that families are informed, supported, and treated with dignity and honesty while navigating an often overwhelming system.”

Children’s Cases Require Special Attention

When children are involved in road accidents, the impact often extends far beyond immediate injuries. Ongoing medical care, rehabilitation and future support may be required for years. Early intervention, proper record keeping and informed decision-making are essential to safeguarding a child’s long-term wellbeing.

RoadCover encourages families to seek expert information as soon as possible after an accident, even if they are unsure whether they qualify for a claim. Knowledge gained at an early stage can significantly influence outcomes later on.

Community Responsibility and Road Safety

While education around claims is vital, RoadCover also stresses the importance of collective responsibility in preventing road accidents. Driver awareness, adherence to traffic laws and child safety measures remain key factors in reducing tragedies on South Africa’s roads.

As communities mourn yet another devastating incident, RoadCover urges South Africans to prioritise both road safety and education around support and rights after an accident.

Understanding your rights can make a meaningful difference when life changes in an instant.

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has recently joined a host of other state-owned entities receiving negative press. It’s understandable, then, that South Africans would lose their faith in the organisation. However, the reality is that the RAF has helped hundreds of thousands of South Africans recover both physically and emotionally after traumatic road accidents, and it continues to do so.

Given the number of recent articles detailing the Fund’s shortcomings, including failing to pay certain claims, along with news of the suspension of several key senior personnel, it is potentially easy to write off the RAF as another organisation that has succumbed to corruption.

Nonetheless, the RAF remains an extremely important body. Consider that there are around 15 000 reported motor vehicle accidents on South African roads each year. In fact, more than 1 502 people died in road accidents during the 2024-2025 festive season alone. Alarmingly, South Africa has one of the highest road fatality rates globally, according to the 2025 Status Report on Road Safety. South Africans are four times more likely to die in traffic accidents than the global average: there are 24.5 fatal accidents per 100 000 people, compared to 6.3 per 100 000 people globally. Sadly, given the poor state of our roads and lawless drivers, even careful drivers are at risk of making mistakes. This highlights the need for protection against the eventuality of a life changing accident.

The RAF provides such protection, compensating all individuals who have been physically or psychologically injured in an accident involving a motor vehicle and victims of hit and run drivers. The fund also makes provision for people who have lost loved ones in an accident. Approximately R45.6 billion in claims was paid during the 2023-2024 financial year.

If your claim for injury is successful, the Fund will reimburse all accident-related medical expenses, past and future loss of earnings, general damages and loss of support (resulting from loss of income), as well as funeral expenses (in the case of loss of life).

In this way, the RAF protects victims against the potential financial fallout of, say, losing a job, or even the financial impact of having to pay for costly medical procedures or rehabilitation. It is therefore a critical social safety net for all South Africans.

Viewed in this light, it is clear that we cannot disregard the RAF and its importance in South Africa’s welfare, economy and development. The problem, however, is that for the average South African road user, it is not an easy process either to lodge a claim, or to have that claim settled.

Understanding the Challenge

Many people who have tried to claim funds from the RAF independently complain that it is a lengthy, expensive and complicated process with high level and detailed paperwork required, and that when finally settled, the compensation is too low to make much of a difference in their lives. What’s more, providing the requisite documentation is an arduous, time consuming process, involving obtaining very costly legal and medical advice. All of this can be exceptionally taxing, especially since claimants are, usually, traumatised after an accident, with little mental or physical energy to spare for these tasks.

Why the Right Support Matters

That’s why it makes sense to partner with an entity that specialises in RAF claims. These organisations have developed long-standing relationships with key players at the organisation; in addition, they understand the correct channels to follow in order to ensure that your claim is successful. Plus, because all their resources are geared towards this outcome, they are able to invest time and effort to make sure that all challenges are addressed. In this way, claimants are assured of receiving the full and fairest settlement.

Not all partners are equal, however. It’s worth doing some research to find one that will offer not only professional assistance but also personal support, which is highly valued at such a time. Ideally, an entity will partner with you, providing regular updates, so that you know the status of your claim. Experience counts, too; but most important is the partner’s payment structure. For instance, many attorneys receive their remuneration by taking a percentage of the RAF payout, which could be up to 25% of your settlement payout over and above legal fees and disbursements. The best option is to find a partner that provides full service and covers the entire family for a small monthly membership fee, which means that the entire settlement from the RAF lands in your pocket, without any deductions or fees.

By working with a specialised partner who understands the system, it is possible to make the most of the RAF and reap the full benefits which are your legal due.
